The Museum of Old Nîmes was created in 1920 by Henri Bauquier to bring together in one place the recent heritage of the City of Nîmes.
Installed in the old episcopal palace which dates from the end of the XVIIth century, the Museum of Old Nîmes preserves and presents the witnesses of life in Nîmes since the end of the Middle Ages.
Everyday objects or extraordinary objects, the collections offer visitors a journey through time organized around themed exhibitions that follow current events or present the different facets of the collection in a broader context or in the permanent rooms. more than 30,000 pieces bear witness to Nîmes life since the early Middle Ages.
Textile collections from 18th century merchant manufacturers, funds from the Nîmes School of Manufacturing, typical Nîmes and Cévennes furniture, regional pottery are the jewels of which the museum is showcasing. One of the permanent rooms invites you to discover the fabulous legend of Jean and the history of denim!
This exhibition tells the story of the making of the Nîmes serge and replaces it in the general history of Nîmes textile production. The Chapter window, a passing place accessible to all, free, adjoining the museum garden, offers the presentation regular exhibitions and surprising installations, such as those carried out in the framework of partnerships with ESBAN Nîmes or the Lycée Hemingway Nîmes.
The Musée du Vieux Nîmes is a dynamic and essential place for any visitor wishing to discover the City.
