This French garden designed by Le Nôtre in the seventeenth century, has been preserved in its entirety by the city of Castres. We discover one of the few embroidery beds still visible in a garden.
This French garden was designed by André Le Nôtre in the pure tradition of 17th century French classicism. His influence, his overall composition and the design of his embroidery went through three centuries without having been fundamentally modified. The embroidery beds take their name from their motifs inspired by the work of the ladies of the seventeenth century court. They represent in a very stylized way the fleur-de-lis surmounted by a bishop's hat, united by an Occitan cross. These symbols can evoke the association of the royal power and the episcopal power in Occitan country, in particular in Castres. These embroideries are surrounded by a flowered massif punctuated with topiaries of venerable yew cut into very different shapes.
